Industry Insight: Straightwirestudios Tampa

Industry Insight For this edition of "Industry Insight" I interview sound engineer Steve Daffner of Straightwirestudios, Tampa.

We had a great discussion at a local coffee shop about his background, the New Orleans music scene, and a little bit about recording equipment.

He has some unique perspectives on the record industry and a ton of knowledge about studio recording. As a result we will be doing a series of programs with him and maybe bring in some other special guests. In the meantime, download, sit back, and get to know Steve a bit.

If you would like to contact Steve, you can drop him an email at stevedaffner[at]yahoo.com.

Featured Band: Slice the Mic Snatcha

Featured BandThis episode of HOG’s Featured Band Podcast spotlights the Buffalo, NY based Slice the Mic Snatcha.

Slice

Hip/Hop and Rap are not my forte’, but I love what Slice the Mic Snatcha is doing.

Slice has a way of writing that feels like it is really coming from his heart and soul. It simply compels me to listen. He fills his music with deep emotion and depth without ever sounding weak. When rapping about family, love, and getting what you are due; he does so with great intellect and passion.

In the interview we discuss his roots as a battle rapper and how he has transitions into something deeper.

For Slice’s musical selections we play "You Gotta" and "Get That Money". Check out his tunes on his MySpace site.

Featured Band: Soulfound

Featured BandFor this episode of HOG’s Featured Band Podcast, we spotlight the band Soulfound.

Soulfound

Their manager first brought Soulfound to my attention. She, as one would expect, was very high on the band. As a result, I approached the band with a very critical ear. I am pleased to say she knows what she is talking about.

From the very first note I was hooked.

The amount of care and craftsmanship found in their tunes is rare for an "unsigned band". It is clear that every member of the band is a master of his art as the musical composition is excellent. Their music is filled with raw power, soul, and just the right amount of emotion.

Why these guys are not signed yet, I have no idea. They have officially taken over the (currently fictional) title of "House Band" (the unofficial title belonged to TheSpeaks before, but the reign had to end some time).

In the audio interview we play "Win Over You" and "The Boy". You can get their music from iTunes or through the official website .

Be sure to check out their MySpace site too.

The audio of the interview is a bit off in places, but please take a listen and, hopefully, I will be able to get another interview with the band at a later date.

Industry Insight – Fourth Coast Management

Industry Insight For this edition of "Industry Insight" I interview personal manager Birgit Von Schondorf of Fourth Coast Management.

We had a great discussion about what she looks for in new acts to represent, What makes one band stand out from another, where the music industry is headed, and how the internet has impacted the way bands work.

She is very passionate about what she does and who she represents. Two of her bands are local to me (SoulFound and aNDY- A Naturally Dominating Youth) and they really do stand out.

Fourth Coast does not take unsolicited materials or MP3s, but if you just want to drop them a line and say "hi" – listen to the audio interview then drop them a line at fourthcoast[at]ionmail.com.

My Space – Owns You?

House PodWe rarely post news from blogs, but this one kinda hits home for most visitors to House Of Gigs so I thought it important to get it out there.

Basically, someone went and actually read the Terms Of Service on My Space and learned something very unnerving for artists…. They may very well own any content you post on the site forever.

Would it hold up in court? Ehhh, I am not sure. It could, however, really suck for you if Rupert Murdock (you did know News Corp. owns My Space now, right?) decided to start selling CDs with your content – odds are you would not see any cash from it unless you brought them to court.

I, personally, don’t think that this is actually the plan, but it does point out the need to read and verify everything you sign/use as an artist. As an artist, the only commodity you own is your “rights”, and that needs to always be protected.

The link to the story is here.

Featured Band: aNDY (a Naturally Dominating Youth)

Featured BandFor this episode of HOG’s Featured Band Podcast, we spotlight the band aNDY.

I had the pleasure of interviewing 4 of the members of this young kick-ass band (only Nick, the drummer, was missing – he was last seen playing for in traffic).

I first heard aNDY in downtown St. Pete while attending a gig for The Reverse Engineers . As I explained in the audio interview, at first I was way too close to the stage for the venue acoustics. After moving back the sound began to separate and I could fully appreciate the craftsmanship and technique of each of the individual members. I can honestly say that I was blown away. Their sound is unique; so much so that I am not even going to try and describe it, you just need to hear it.aNDY

When I saw them perform live I was especially impressed with the amount of energy they put out for the very small crowd. They left it all on the stage and left myself and those I was with wanting just a little more (which is exactly how it should be).

These guys were great fun to talk to and deserve a listen, if only to find out what "Die Hard", Tetris, "Wayne’s World" and Kelly Clarkson all have in common.

In the audio interview we play "Tetris" and "Calm Waters". You can get their music from iTunes or (soon) through the official website.

Be sure to check out their MySpace site too.
